“Being involved with a start-up company has been (and still is) a great experience. It’s a very exciting scene, and I get to work on a ton of different projects—both things I’ve done in the past and things that I never really saw myself doing. I’m learning a lot about design and adapting to new ways of thinking through these new responsibilities. It definitely is a lot of work, but it’s satisfying to have creative freedom and for that to be an integral part of something bigger, rather than the intern standard of scooting-around-and-getting-coffee kind of business. I don’t think I’d have this kind of opportunity as an entry-level designer at any other type of company.”

“The PCKIZ Internship Program was a key aspect of my college career that allowed me to gain valuable skills to apply to the mechanical engineering field. My familiarity with the natural gas industry and Solidworks skills which I learned while working at Lechtzer Incorporated helped make me a strong contender in the job market. These skills were particularly attractive to my current employer, Det Norske Veritas, where I now work as a Pipeline Integrity Engineer in their Asset Risk Management Group. I am thankful to both Dr. Harold Lessure at Lechtzer Incorporated and everyone at Urban Innovation 21 for their role in landing me a full time position with such a world class company.”

“This internship has benefited me greatly, not only because I was able to receive actual workplace experience, but also because I was able to get a part time job that works around my school schedule. After that experience I feel more comfortable in my ability to be an effective asset to a company. I am eternally grateful for the Urban Innovation21 group because they have provided me and other students with an opportunity to test the waters of the workforce.

“During my time here, I received hands on experience about advertising and public relations. I completed a wide range of tasks, from going to meetings by myself to represent the company, to holding my own presentations on products and ideas that I believe will better the company. Not to mention reaching out to other companies to look for possible partnering opportunities and finding corporate summits and expos for our VPs to attend to help our name out there.”

“I liked that my internship company never gave me what seemed like menial tasks. They always seemed to genuinely care that I was getting a valuable internship experience and brought me onto some exciting projects.”

“This internship gave me a better understanding of the work world. My supervisors told me it is ok to be scared, and ask them for help. Over the weeks, my fear disappeared, and work got easier and easier. I was very proud of myself.”

“Being in this internship has opened me up to a whole new world. This is the time in my life where I start to notice the changes from adolescence to adulthood. I find myself talking about insurance, following up on reports from the supreme court, and looking at the bigger picture when it comes to making important decisions… I believe that this experience will help me in my career by helping me understand the gravity of the way the world works”

“I’ve learned the ins and outs of maintaining a relationship with co-workers in the workplace and the rigor of working day to day in a specific career. I also learned more as to what I would like to do after college with my business degree…I think that this experience will help me in a career because it has given me the opportunity to gain the knowledge of a real work environment and it had also given me a chance to put my name out there and network with people.”
